Dave Pezler, a twelve year old boy, has been mentally and physically abused by his once loving mother. Every day is another chance for survival. Will he die of starvation, abuse, sickness, negligence? There are times when Dave has to live days without a nibble of food, not because his mother doesn't cook, but because she refuses to feed him as punishment for his "attitude". The story begins with a post flashback that lets the reader know he is rescued. He lives as a social outcast at school due to his unhygienic physic, with his only friend being the school nurse who cares for him as if he were her own child. As the nurse examines Dave for his weekly physical she notices a stab wound his mother left. This is the last straw. The police are contacted and he is rescued from this shattered home.
The abuse this child has to endure is heart wrenching. After constant abused he has learned to never look his mother in the eye or stay on the floor because it shows defiance. Instead he gets back up after a beating and stares at his destroyed shoes he has been using for years. Although I have been privileged to live in a loving home many of my distant relatives have not been so fortunate. A defiant aunt of mine had abandoned her two children because she was tired of being held down by them as a burden. My two cousins were lovingly accepted by my godmother but will have to live wondering what was it about them that made their own mother abandon them. What had they done that was so annoying? When an adult makes the decision to have a child, they also make the decision that the life of another human being is more important than their own and they give give their unconditional love to their child. In these times it can easy to give up a child, but they are not some toy you can get rid of when your'e bored you must treat them with love and care forever.
This week I finished the first 60 page section of my book. I enjoyed it from the comfort of my own couch. Since this is an autobiography, it is very easy to read and just breeze by. I have not used any methods for understanding my book because i genuinely enjoy reading this and it appeals to my interests. I have actually been very tempting to break my reading schedule and just breeze through the book but i have had self control and stuck to reading the 60 pages i set myself to. I'm excited to read next weeks section learn more about how Dave Pezler was strong enough to survive and become successful even when he had to endure such horrible behavior.
