Finally Dave's life starts to turn around! Dave's social worker is able to win his case and refuse custody of Dave to his mother. She tells him that this is only the beginning of his new life. For the first time, an adult actually gives Dave some words of praise. These words become the foundation of his new confident and social attitude. She then takes him out to eat some ice cream and then continue on their journey to find Dave a nice family with whim he can spend the rest of his childhood with and live happily knowing there is someone who loves him dearly.
This week, my book has taught me that although actions do speak louder than words, sometimes words can also make or break a person. In Dave's case, he was not only physically hurt but also verbally. His mother constantly told him he was useless, pathetic, and several other hurtful things. But, instantly when his social worker showed him some kindness by calling him sweetie and telling him he was worth listening and paying attention to, Dave began to also realize that he does deserve to be happy in this world even though his mother always told him that he was an accident and should not have been born. In our current society, bullying is also not only physical but verbal. We need to learn to not call others hurtful names because we have no idea what they could be dealing with. Chose your words wisely. Speak words that bring people up rather than tearing them down.
During this busy and tiresome week, I managed to read the next section in my book. Because of the simplicity of my book I still haven't implemented any new reading strategies. I am anxious to read the last section in my book and finally reach the end of Dave's story.
