In both A Child Called It and The Lost Boy, Dave Pelzer told his unfortunate story as he was abused by his cruel mother. But now, Dave is out of the orphanage and is now living with a new loving foster family. His dream of being an actual member of a family has finally come true. Although he is still adjusting to his new life (he has trouble calling his foster mom, "Mom"), he is getting comfortable with his new surrounding because he is grateful to be out of his mother's dungeon. His foster brother, Big Larry has made him feel right at home. They constantly go on adventures to venture the city or simply go watch James Bond movies. On the other hand, his other brother, Larry Jr. is making his life miserable. They constantly get in verbal and physical fights which is ruining Dave's reputation as a "good boy". Dave has also started to visit a physiologist, who Dave believes is phyco. But over Dave's life is normal, which is something he always wanted. He learns that he would rather get in silly sibling fights and make up right after with Larry rather than live with his birth mother.
This weeks reading has taught me that although starting a new chapter in your life can be an extremely difficult process, there is always light at the end of the tunnel that will guide you to your new beginning. Dave has had many difficulties adjusting to his new life but he always manages to see the good in that situation. Honestly, the only way to be truly happy in this world is to have an attitude like Dave's. We grow up only seeing that bad aspects of a situation. But if we only focus on the good then nothing can ever make you upset. Dave's strength throughout the whole novel has surprised me. I would feel like giving up and just do whatever his mom said. But not Dave. He always fought to be free and to be an independent child until he got what he wanted. The fact that this child learned the very important life lesson of standing up for yourself at such young age shows he if very mature and will grow up to be an amazing human being.
Finally, we have reached the end... Although this book brought me to tears several times, this is an amazing book that I recommend to all teenagers and adults. Since it is just an easy book I did not have to apply any higher level thinking to understand it. The ease at which I was able to read made reading the book an enjoyable experience. As I sign off on my last blog post I'd like to say thank you to those taking the time to read my thoughts and share my experience as I read this young boys story. I hope you enjoyed.
